RJ Act 1

What are your first impressions of Romeo and Juliet? Do they seem like typical teenagers to you?

Romeo and Juliet fall for each other at first sight, but both are shocked to learn of the other’s identity. With whom should their loyalties lie? In other words, should they follow their hearts or stay true to their families? Explain your answer.

What is Juliet’s reaction when Lady Capulet tells her of Paris’s marriage proposal? How would you react if your mother told you that you were to be married shortly?

Some adults might say that teenagers fall in and out of love as quickly as the weather changes. What is your opinion? Are teenagers really this inconstant, or are adults not giving them enough credit for their emotions?

Do you believe in love at first sight? Explain your answer.

Describe the relationship between Juliet and her parents. How is it different from the relationship between parents and children today?

After breaking up the street fight, the Prince warns the Capulets and the Montagues that if their fighting disturbs the peace of the streets again, they are under “pain of death.” What do you think about this solution? Could the Prince have handled the problem differently? How?

In Act 1 we learn that the Capulets and the Montagues are sworn enemies. Their intense dislike for each other causes a lot of civic disturbance. As the Prince makes clear, disturbing the peace of the streets is a problem! Considering both history and current events, what other “feuds” can you name that have disrupted society?
